The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has initiated efforts to enhance internet speeds in Nigeria by utilizing the 6GHz spectrum. This was announced by the NCC’s Executive Vice Chairman, Dr. Aminu Maida, during a Stakeholders’ Consultative Forum on Emerging Technologies held in Lagos. The 6GHz spectrum, which spans from 5925 MHz to 7125 MHz, offers substantial benefits for wireless communication, such as faster data transmission and improved reliability compared to the currently used 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands.
The initiative comes in response to increasing demand for high-speed internet and capacity limitations in existing frequency bands. Wi-Fi plays a critical role in broadband distribution, especially in homes and enterprises, where high data throughput and low latency are necessary. Nigeria’s adoption of the 6GHz band aligns with global trends, as over 70 countries have already moved or are planning to open the spectrum for unlicensed Wi-Fi use.
The introduction of Wi-Fi 6, powered by the 6GHz band, is expected to enhance connectivity in high-demand environments such as offices, stadiums, and airports. It will also help reduce network congestion by shifting devices from cellular networks to Wi-Fi.
Telecom operators, through the Association of Licensed Telecoms Operators of Nigeria (ALTON), have expressed concerns over their financial capacity to upgrade infrastructure for the new spectrum. They are appealing to the Nigerian government for support in overcoming these challenges.
The GSMA, a global mobile industry organization, has urged governments worldwide to allocate the 6GHz spectrum for mobile use, highlighting its potential to drive economic growth and support the future of 5G. By tapping into this spectrum, mobile operators can expand network capacity and achieve more efficient deployment.
