What is the Repost Button
The Repost Button is a new sharing option available on public posts and reels. It allows you to share someone else’s content directly to your feed or stories while maintaining clear attribution to the original creator. This feature began rolling out globally on August 6 and 7, 2025, as part of Instagram’s wider update that also introduced a new map feature and changes to the Friends tab.

How it works
When you see a public post or reel, look for the Repost icon beneath it. The icon is made up of two circular arrows and sits alongside the like, comment, and share buttons. Tapping it opens a small pop-up where you can choose to repost and add an optional note or caption. Once you confirm, the repost appears in your followers’ feeds and may also be recommended to people outside your follower list.
If you change your mind, you can undo a repost by tapping the same button again.
Where reposts show
Instagram has added a dedicated Reposts tab on your profile. This tab, located between the Reels and Tagged Photos tabs, displays all the content you have reposted. Your followers can view your repost history without it mixing into your primary posts grid, keeping your original uploads and reposted content organised.
Benefits for creators
The Repost Button helps creators reach a wider audience. Every repost carries the original creator’s username, which can attract new followers and engagement. Since reposted content can appear in algorithmic recommendations, creators gain extra exposure without additional posting effo
You can support this with a clear call to action in your caption. Ask viewers to visit the original post and follow you for more.
Privacy and controls
The feature is only available for content from public accounts. If you try to repost from a private account, the option will not be available. Creators who prefer to keep their posts from being reshared can turn off reposting in their settings. This option is found under Profile → Menu → Sharing → “Allow reposts”. Once disabled, the Repost Button will be inactive for their content.
Limits to note
-
You cannot repost content from private accounts
-
Removing the original post will also remove all its reposts
-
Posts with reposting disabled will not show the active button
-
Reposting does not bypass copyright enforcement
How this changes sharing
Before this Instagram repost update, sharing content meant adding it to your story, sending it via direct message, or re-uploading it manually. The new Repost Button streamlines the process, ensures the creator is credited, and keeps reposted content in its own profile section. It works in a similar way to a retweet on X (formerly Twitter) or a reblog on Tumblr.
Tips for better reach
- Repost content that aligns with your niche and audience.
- Add a short context in your note to guide viewers.
- Post at your best time. Use your account insights to pick slots.
- Engage in the comments to keep the post active.
