The Lagos state government has introduced the use of electric busses in its transportation system, a move that will see the state say goodbye to buying fuel.

Lagos state governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu made the announcement via his Twitter handle, following the release of the first set of the electric busses.

According to him,  the state government is introducing the first set of electric buses in the Lagos Mass Transit Master Plan “as part of our increased effort to modernise every sector of Lagos.”

Sharing photos of the electric busses, the governor said the initiative will see the state government bidding goodbye to buying of fuel to run existing busses that run on fuel.

He said the initiative is geared towards transforming Lagos into a smarter city. Lagos electric busses

“Our new electric buses will not only reduce carbon emissions but will also increase efficiency.

“This means that Lagosians can say goodbye to high fuel costs and hello to cost-efficient transportation.

“We shall be running a pilot scheme over the next few months to gather sufficient data required to analyse the operational efficiencies relative to the current BRT buses to further improve our public transport service.”

How the Busses Work:

According to the governor, the electric buses have more kilometer capacity coverage than the existing buses.  Lagos electric busses

He said, while the current busses which are not electric busses commute a daily average of 200km, the electric busses can commute a daily average of 280km at full charge.

I am excited to announce the first set of electric buses in the Lagos Mass Transit Master Plan as part of our increased effort to modernise every sector of Lagos.

“Thanks to our partnership with @Oando_PLC  Lagosians can expect a cleaner and greener public transportation system.

“With the ability to travel 280km at full charge, taking into account our unique travel times in Lagos, our electric buses are a game-changer.

“With an average daily usage of 200km by existing BRTs, there is no need to fear that the buses can stop while in transit.”

Environmentally Friendly:

Also speaking, the governor noted that the electric busses are environmentally friendly as they don’t emit gasses that are inimical to or can deplete the ozone layer or add to global warming.

Charging The Electric Buses:

Sanwo-Olu allayed fears that the busses could suddenly stop while on transit, noting that whereas existing BRT busses run an average of 200km per day, the new electric busses, when fully charged, can run at 280km per day.

He also noted that the state government has partnered Oando Clean Energy Limited to strategically place Universal Chargers at public places.Lagos electric busses

according to him, “We understand the need for charging stations to power our electric buses, which is why we are partnering with Oando Clean Energy Limited to strategically place Universal Chargers at public places like malls and gas stations. We also plan to establish an Assembly Plant for Electric Buses in the near future.”

Commencement of Service:

The state governor said that his government is commencing the pilot test of the electric buses to ascertain the operational efficiencies relative to the current BRT busses running in the state.

“We shall be running a pilot scheme over the next few months to gather sufficient data required to analyse the operational efficiencies relative to the current BRT buses to further improve our public transport service.”
