Russia Invades Ukraine: Let’s Compare Their Military Power

Russia Invasion Of Ukraine: Military Power Compared

Russia invade Ukraine after deploying a massive arsenal of missiles and rockets into Ukraine.

Although Ukraine has equally been responding to the external threat, it would be nice if we compare the two countries’ military powers.

Well, for a fact, Russia is a king of the jungle when it comes to missile technology.

Russia had stationed over 100,000 troops whose numbers reached nearly 200,000 and positioned themselves around Ukraine.

On Thursday morning, while President Vladimir Putin announced a special military operations in Donbass, Russian troops entered Ukraine from the southwest.

Soon, explosions began rocking the air across Ukraine, including in its capital Kyiv.

Also, Russia started bombing Kharkiv in Ukraine’s northeast, and its second largest city.

Although western European nations have contributed military equipment to Ukraine in the recent past.

However, the country’s military capabilities pale in comparison to Russia’s.

This is because, Russia’s military power is among the mightiest armed forces in the world.

Now, let us compare the two countries’ military powers:

Military Expenditure:

A report from the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) tracks global arms trade.

The report says Russia’s military expenditure in 2020 was US$ 61.7 billion which is ten times of US$5.9 billion that Ukraine spent.

Head count:

In terms of head count, Russia outnumbers Ukraine.

Report by Global Fire Power, which has been analysing the military capabilities of countries across the world since 2006, says Russia is the second most powerful country militarily.

It, however, said Ukraine is ranked 22 out of 140 nations.

Russia has at least 850, 000 active military capable personnel while Ukraine has only about 250, 000 active personnel.

This means Russia’s personnel is three times that of Ukraine.

Air Power:

In terms of airpower, Russia has more than 4,100 aircraft and 772 fighters.

Conversely, Ukraine only has 318 total aircrafts, with just 69 fighter aircraft.

Ground Forces:

In terms of ground forces, Russia has around 12,500 tanks and more than 30,000 armoured vehicles.

Also, Russia has around 14,000 towed and self-propelled artillery guns.

Ukraine, on the other hand, has only around 2,600 tanks and 12,000 armoured vehicles.

Also, Ukraine has a total number of just over 3,000 towed and self-propelled artillery guns.

Naval Vessels and Submarines:

Regarding Naval vessels, Russia has over 600 naval vessels, including one aircraft carrier.

Conversely, Ukraine has a total of 38 naval vessels.

For stealth capabilities in the sea, while Ukraine has zero submarines, Russia has 70 submarines.

Nevertheless, Ukraine had been arming itself with anti-tank missiles supposedly from the US.

Ukraine also got some hundreds of the Javelin missiles since December, which will help Ukrainian troops to target Russian tanks.

They are man-portable fire-and-forget anti-tank missiles, which means that a soldier can fire it from his shoulder, and its automatic infrared guidance system will target the tanks from above, which is the weakest part of any tank.

Nevertheless, following Russian invasion of Ukraine, on Friday the 25th of February, 2022, a Ukranian jet reportedly shot down six Russian fierce fighter jets.

Also, the exchange of firepower is currently ongoing as Russian troops have entered Ukraine’s capital.

Implication:

Although Ukraine received some weapons from US, their strength is yet to match Russia’s.

Meanwhile, despite Russia’s dominance in the aggression, so far, the country seemed to have received the most casualty with many footages of Russian jets, assault tanks and soldiers neutralized by Ukrainian forces.

But the world still await the final outcome of the aggression.
