The highly-anticipated Sony PlayStation 5 console made a grand entrance into the gaming market, one that will stick around for long.
It was exciting and unbelievable when it was discovered that the PS5 gaming console had sold out within 24-hours of launch.
Sony Corporation, the maker of the top-selling video game console – PS5, claimed that the initial success of the PS5 was merited.
According to the CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), Jim Ryan, the PS5 consoles sold out despite effort to have enough in stock.

“The way we took it to market might have been a bit different, but the actual product would have been the same.
“We might have had a few more to sell, but not very many; the guys on the production/manufacturing side have worked miracles,” Ryan said.
While not totally disregarding the impact of the pandemic, Ryan admitted that launching in the middle of a pandemic was very challenging.

He went as far as saying that he “wouldn’t recommend” such to anybody else.
He also confirmed that their biggest issue during the pandemic was during pre-production.
“The team had to do all the manufacturing preparation camera-remotely,” Ryan added.
While the first batch of supply is out already, Ryan confirmed that work is ongoing t ensure that more supply is available.
“I’ve spent much of the last year trying to be sure that we can generate enough demand for the product. And now… I’m spending a lot more time on trying to increase supply to meet that demand.”
Sony plans to sell 7.6 million units within the first five months
Sony’s long-term goal is to outperform the current PS4 sales record. The previous generation of PS gaming consoles sold approximately 113.7 million units to date.
While PS4 was able to achieve this height in its seven years of existence, the goal is for PS5 to outperform the current record.

However, in the short term, Sony expects the PlayStation 5 gaming console to sell at least 7.6 million units by the end of its current fiscal year slated for March 31, 2020.
The projection was made by the company’s CFO, Hiroki Totoki, during an earnings call with investors back in October.
Going by Totoki’s projection, and giving the success of the 1st batch of supply, the next round of sales is also very promising.

While the projection is positioned for a smooth run, Tokoti said achieving the figures is somewhat dependent on the PS5 success in the US.
Tokoti was asked during an interview if the company could possibly sell about 100 million PS5 console units.
In his response, he said, “Yes, it is a challenge, but we are very eager and committed to succeed and surpass the aggregated unit sales of PS4.”
In the meantime, the buzz around the PS5 gaming console is still very high, with almost no negative feedback.
As such, it won’t be surprising if the next batch of supply also gets sold out in a very short time frame.
