National Grid Collapses As Nigerians Suffer Unending Darkness

National grid collapses in Nigeria again as Nigerian electricity consumers suffer unending darkness.

On February 14, 2022, Nigerians witnessed national grid collapse which has continued to occur.

Electricity consumers in major cities in Nigeria such as Lagos, Enugu, Ibadan and Anambra are experiencing darkness over collapse of the national grid.

This is the second time the national grid is collapsing in just two days.

Regular occurrence:

The national grid collapse has bec0ome a regular occurrence in Nigeria.

For instance, between 2010 and 2019, the grid experienced 206 collapses.

Also, it is the second time the national grid is collapsing in less than two days.

Meanwhile, the Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) reported the collapse on Monday.

EKEDC is a Distribution Company (DISCO) in Nigeria.

The Solution:

Although EKEDC had said its customers would soon have power, the reverse seems to be the case.

It equally said in a statement that Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) stations have been restored too.

On Tuesday, EKEDC twitted again saying the national grid had collapsed again.

According to the tweet, it said thus:

“Dear esteemed customers, we would like to inform you of another system collapse on the national grid which occurred at 5:10pm today.

“We are monitoring the situation and will continue to provide updates. Once again, we apologise for the inconvenience,” it said.

Similarly, the Enugu Electricity Distribution PLC (EEDC) also informed its customers in the south-east of Nigeria of national grid collapse.

In a statement it titled ‘Notice Of Another System Collapse,’ it told customers that its outgoing feeders were out.

It said its customers in Abia, Anambra and Imo states would not have power as a result of the ntional grid collapse.

EEDC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Emeka Ezeh signed the statement.

He said thus:

“The Enugu Electricity Distribution PLC (EEDC) wishes to inform her esteemed customers of another system collapse which occurred at 5.10pm this evening, Tuesday, 15th March 2022.”

“This is coming barely 24 hours after the grid collapse experienced in the early hours of yesterday, Monday, 14th March 2022.

“As a result of this unfortunate development, all our outgoing feeders are out and supply to our customers in Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States has been affected.

“We are currently on standby, awaiting further directive from the National Control Centre (NCC) for restoration of supply.”

Similarly, another distribution company, the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company Plc (IBDEC) also reported same issue.

However, it assured customers that it was monitoring the situation.

Nevertheless, TCN maintained  last week that the national grid collapse occurred because the generating companies aren’t generating enough.

Implications:

National grid collapse means Nigerians won’t have power as long as it persists.

It means you won’t have light to watch your football match, blend your tomatoes, heat your water and many more.

Anything you can do with power, you won’t be able to do them because you won’t have power.

However, you can only do them by using alternative sources of power.

Therefore, the national grid collapse has affected businesses in Nigeria.

It has equally resulted in many Nigerians turning to alternative sources like Solar, inverters and petrol.

Also, it has taken a toll on the prices of goods and services in the country as Nigerians are now paying and expending more to enjoy power.
