Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu has been the subject of a heated debate on Twitter after the opposition party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), and its former presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, filed a lawsuit in a US court to compel the Chicago State University (CSU) to release Tinubu’s academic records12.

The PDP and Atiku allege that Tinubu did not graduate from CSU as he claimed in his official biography, and that he forged his certificate.

They also claim that Tinubu lied about attending other schools, such as the Government College, Ibadan, and the Richard J. Daley College in Chicago2.

“This is now official. The Chicago State University in the United States of America, in response to the application filed by the @OfficialPDPNig and its Presidential Candidate in the February 25, 2023 Election, @Atiku, has agreed to release the credentials of Bola A. Tinubu.

“Nigerians and members of the international community are eagerly waiting for this information as this will form greater part of the decision-making process of the petition before the court.”

However, CSU has confirmed that Tinubu was indeed a student of the university and that he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting in 19793.

The university also said that it has no records of any legal request from the PDP or Atiku to disclose Tinubu’s credentials1.

Tinubu, who is 71 years old, is a former governor of Lagos State and a leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party.

He was sworn in as Nigeria’s president in May 2023 after winning the country’s most competitive election since the end of military rule in 199945.

He is widely regarded as a political “godfather” who has influenced the careers of many prominent politicians in Nigeria65.

The Twitter debate over Tinubu’s credentials has generated thousands of tweets, with some users supporting him and others questioning his integrity.

Some have also compared him to former US President Donald Trump, who faced similar allegations of lying about his academic background2.

While reacting to an inquiry made by a tweep with handle, @SamAmadi, @DOlusegun posted documents confirming Chicago State University’s response to Atiku’s probe.
