Twitter Adds Former Google VP to its Board

According to Business Insider, Twitter has added Stanford professor and former Google vice president to its board of directors, a sign of the company’s growing emphasis on AI

Twitter has been throwing its weight on AI in recent times. As their contribution to the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic, they have been using AI to identify misinformation on the virus across the globe. They have also been using AI to help smoothen this year’s U.S. presidential race.

Fei-Fei Li, an artificial intelligence expert, will join the board as an independent director immediately.

“With unparalleled expertise in engineering, computer science and artificial intelligence , Fei-Fei brings relevant perspectives to the Board as Twitter continues to utilize technology to improve our service and achieve our long-term objectives,” Twitter executive chair Omid Kordestani said in a news release.

“She shares Twitter’s passion for using technology to promote positive change and her appointment aligns with our commitment to adding a director who reflects the diversity of the Twitter service and also possesses deep technology and AI expertise.” Twitter announced.

“AI and machine learning can have an enormous impact on technology and the people who use it,” Li said in the announcement. “I look forward to leveraging my experience for Twitter as it harnesses this technology to benefit everyone who uses the service.”

Li left Google amid a controversy that had to do with Google’s contract to build AI tools for United States Department of Defense.

Google dropped the project after 12 employees quit in protest.
